Ulgueira Villa
Colares, Sintra
Property Overview
This family holiday home, set in the quiet hills of Colares, was carefully reworked to modernise essential elements without losing its original character. Built in the 1990s, the house had strong foundations: hand-finished plaster walls, terracotta floors, and generous openings to a vibrant garden. The layout and materials, however, felt conservative and dated. The renovation aimed to refine the spatial arrangement and update the finishes with smart, contemporary details.

LandingPad’s primary intervention was structural: the partial demolition of a wall separating the kitchen and living room to create an open connection between the spaces while maintaining the building’s structural integrity. A skylight was added over the kitchen workstation, dramatically improving the natural light in the center of the house.
The custom-built kitchen was arranged around a breakfast nook built into a sunny corner. All bathrooms were fully redesigned and rebuilt, integrating Portuguese tiles, Italian fixtures, walk-in showers, and bespoke Silestone basins.
All internal finishes were replaced or restored. Underfloor heating was installed through the living spaces, bathrooms, and hallways for energy efficiency and comfort. Throughout the main rooms, new wood flooring was laid in continuous 11.5-metre planks, a design choice that required precise planning and careful handling on site. The bedrooms, bathrooms, and basement were all finished in microcement for a seamless yet durable surface.
To preserve the tactile quality of the original build and maintain the home’s connection to its natural environment, original features & carpentry were retained wherever possible. At the same time, technical upgrades addressed the home’s coastal climate and temperature requirements, with targeted interventions resolving long-standing humidity issues from water infiltration at the lower windows.
The result is a calm, efficient home that feels grounded in its surroundings and balances aesthetic minimalism with technical performance.
